More than Marriage Nonfiction Anthology

Ooligan Press seeks creative nonfiction and personal essays from LGBTQ writers of the Pacific Northwest for the anthology More than Marriage (working title). The anthology will add fresh voices to an ongoing conversation about queer equality, with the understanding that the national focus on gay marriage may not answer the most pressing concerns for many members of the community. These include, but are not limited to, experiences with healthcare and employment, definitions of family and partnerships that extend beyond the nuclear or monogamous traditions, definitions of home, explorations of visibility, of equality, and more. What is important to you? We seek diverse perspectives and strongly encourage trans* writers, writers of color, rural and working class writers to submit.

Authors should identify as LGBTQ. Submissions should have some relationship to the Pacific Northwest. Authors may submit works of no more than 5,000 words each to https://ooliganpress.submittable.com/submit. Please include email contact information and a 100 word bio.

Deadline to submit is November 15, 2013.

About the Editor:
Carter Sickels is the author of the novel The Evening Hour, a finalist for the 2013 Oregon Book Award, the Lambda Literary Debut Fiction Award, and the Publishing Triangle Edmund White Debut Fiction Award. He is winner of the 2013 Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Award, and the recipient of a 2013 project grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council. Carter has taught creative writing classes for the Attic Institute, Hugo House, and Gotham Writers’ Workshop. He is currently visiting faculty for West Virginia Wesleyan's Low Res MFA Program. Carter lives in Portland, Oregon.

Call for Submissions: National Coming Out Day

The Portland Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are hosting an event for National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11th, and we want to hear your coming out story!

Call for submissions

Have you come out as a Lesbian, Gay, Bi, or Trans person? Tell us about it through your poetry, slam poetry, essays, spoken word pieces, or any kind of performance art! Tell us about when you realized you were different, or the moment you decided you were going to be yourself no matter what others thought! Share your first "gay" date, or your most exciting, embarrassing, or heart fluttering moment.

Theprocess is different for everyone and coming out can be scary, stressful, and painful at times, but these pieces should focus on the positive aspects of coming out and speaking your truth. Our goal is to encourage and support each other. This is a celebration of you being you!

Submissions should be 3-5 minutes long, and are considered copyright to their owners. We'll be asking 18-20 people to perform their work live for the celebration at Crush in Portland, Oregon on NCOD from 7pm to 9pm..

A SHORT STORY ANTHOLOGY from

FOREST AVENUE PRESS

Forest Avenue Press (www.forestavenuepress.com) is seeking short stories by Oregon and Southwest Washington authors for a fiction anthology. The open submission period will run from June 1 to July 31, 2013. The collection will be edited by  short story writer and teacher, Liz Prato, and is slated for release in May 2014.

Maximum length is 6,000 words, although we prefer shorter stories. We enjoy Pacific Northwest settings, but also like local writers with a sense of the larger world. We’re hoping to attract writers from across the state.

This Oregon anthology follows the October 2012 publication of Brave on the Page: Oregon Writers on Craft and the Creative Life, an anthology of flash essays and interviews by forty-two contributors. Brave on the Page spent four months on the Powell’s Small Press Bestseller List.

How will the Cascadia region turn different by 2063? What new land-use
patterns will emerge over the next 50 years? What’s happening today (2013) that will influence the Pacific Northwest for decades to come? What should be done about it?

Calling all planners, designers, creative theorists, writers and
speculators—The Bear Deluxe Magazine is looking for your feedback, ideas and imagination. Send us your written submissions and we’ll broadcast them out to a regional and national audience. Submissions to be considered for publication in The Bear Deluxe Magazine #35, special theme-issue on the “The Future.” (Other prompts: Klamath River dam removal; the proposed Columbia River Crossing?)

Special issue is funded in part by the Regional Arts & Culture Council.
