Thackeray himself said of his masterpiece, "there is a great quantity of eating and drinking, making love and jilting, laughing and the contrary, smoking, cheating, fighting, dancing and fiddling." Amidst this great romp swirls Becky Sharp, one of literature's most complex and complete heroines. We'll forego too much analysis to revel in the fun, candor, big-heartedness and love Thackeray captures so perfectly.

GUIDE: Sara Guest has worked as a writer and editor for Encyclopaedia Britannica, Apple Computer, Harpo Studios (Oprah's Book Club), Lewis & Clark College and Write Around Portland. She currently adjuncts at PNCA and facilitates a local book club for writers.
