Hiding the Plumbing: Strategies for Invisible Exposition
Susan DeFreitas, Indigo Editing & Publications

One of the most maddening issues faced by fiction writers is how to
convey that all-important information in the past of the story (the
backstory, or exposition) without breaking the flow of action in the
present. In this sense, the exposition is like the plumbing: we all want
it to work, but we don’t want to know it’s there. In this class,
writers will gain an array of highly pragmatic tools for burying the
backstory and installing the plumbing, all without their readers
becoming aware of it.

Write and Sell a Bestselling Nonfiction Book

Are you an expert in a field? Do you have a passion for a topic you want
to share with the world? Or maybe you would like to write a book to
increase business in your field? It’s all possible. Join Julie as she
takes you from discovering your sellable idea to the publishing
possibilities for your finished product. She will discuss the current
state of traditional nonfiction publishing as well as why personal
publishing has become a powerful, lucrative and quick way to dispense
your ideas to an audience. As you may have noticed, the word book
no longer means words on paper between two covers published by large
corporations. All that has changed in favor of the author. Your ideas
can now take many forms from a printed or electronic book and workbook
to a course or interactive product on a tablet. The goal of this class
is to help you find your perfect topic and the best way to present it to
 your readers.
